Psalm 2:1, “Why do the nations rage, and the people plot in vain.”

  • BIG QUESTION: When human effort and human rebellion both fail to secure the future, where does lasting blessing for the world actually come from?
  • BIG IDEA: Human initiative and rebellion are contrasted with God’s sovereign decree and gracious promise, culminating in the establishment of God’s chosen king through whom blessing comes to the world for eternity.

David wants to build God a bayit — TEMPLE.  
God answers by promising to build David a bayit — DYNASTY

God doesn’t want David to build him a house: He doesn’t need one.
1) The INCARNATIONAL Principle – v. 6, This God lives with His people
2) The GRACE Principle – v. 8, David you can’t do anything for me. You can only do things through me. 

David at REST is at RISK.  He was about to cross over a line from being FULL of God to being FULL of Himself. But David hears God. David's response is essentially an EXTENDED amen, receiving rather than NEGOTIATING.  The PROMISE was ENOUGH for DAVID.

His SECURITY was never in his own RECORD. It was in God's word, and specifically in this promise.
Like David, our SECURITY is not in our RECORD. It’s in God’s Word – The word that became flesh and dwelt among his people.

Ask yourself

  1. Where in your life right now are you trying to secure your own future (through effort, performance, or control) instead of resting in a promise God has already made?
  2. When you look back, honestly, do you see mostly your own successes and failures, or can you trace God's faithfulness running underneath both?
  3. Is there a specific promise of God you have stopped believing lately, not rejected outright, just quietly stopped leaning on under pressure? What would it look like this week to say Amen to it again, the way David did in his prayer?
