We discover in Mark’s Gospel the call to follow Jesus.

As the gospel narrative has unfolded, we have seen teaching, miracles, crowds, wonder, confusion and opposition.

What response will we have? One of curiosity that draws us in? or, One of scepticism that pushes Jesus away? Or, One that acknowledges who He is - yet is left unchanged.

A few questions to sit with;

  • What are we coming to Jesus for?

Problem solver? As a way to tip the scales our way? Fallback plan? Or…?

Come to Jesus for who He is!

Come to Jesus for what he’s done!

Come to Jesus for what he’s doing!

Come to Jesus for what he’s going to do!

  • Have we reduced Jesus to a slogan, statement, a song...?

Or can he really be the Son of the Living God? Acts 4:13

Does his presence change you?

Do you see his promises as hopeful?

Do you experience his transformative power in your life?

  • Are we hearing his call to be with him, and then be sent by him?

These two always work in tandem. It is a reflective of the life of Jesus. As we become more like him we do the things he did, we live in the manner that he did – his priorities become our priorities etc.

Being with Jesus will enable us to walk in his ways – do what he did, go where he went, live and love as he did.

Thought Experiment – knowing that Jesus called us to follow him…

  • If someone were to follow you - would they see/find Jesus -throughout your day?
  • Would they see evidence of the transformative work of the Spirit in our interactions with one another? Not there yet - thankfully God is working on us.
  • Would they see someone honestly wrestling with how to live in the 21st Century as a faithful follower of Jesus
