We’re able to walk in the way of Jesus because He first walked in our ways. This means that Jesus is a FORERUNNER of our FAITH.

Hebrews 2:14-18 CSB - 14 Now since the children have flesh and blood in common, Jesus also shared in these, so that through his death he might destroy the one holding the power of death—that is, the devil— 15 and free those who were held in slavery all their lives by the fear of death. 16 For it is clear that he does not reach out to help angels, but to help Abraham’s offspring. 17 Therefore, he had to be like his brothers and sisters in every way, so that he could become a merciful and faithful high priest in matters pertaining to God, to make atonement for the sins of the people. 18 For since he himself has suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are tempted.

Jesus IDENTIFIES with us so that we can identify with Him:

  • In POSITION – Jesus BAPTISM identifies us with Him as God’s children, affirmed instead of judged.
  • In POWER – Jesus TEMPTATION shows us that victory over sin is done in the power of the Spirit not the flesh.
  • In PROCLAMATION – Jesus proclamation invites us to participate in the Kingdom through repentance and belief.

THE BAPTISM - Mark 1:9-11

  • John’s Baptism: A baptism of repentance, preparing people for the coming Messiah (Mark 1:4).
It symbolized turning from sin but did not impart the Holy Spirit.
  • Jesus’ Baptism: Though sinless, Jesus was baptized by John to identify with sinners, fulfill all righteousness (Matt. 3:15), and mark the start of His public ministry. It also revealed His identity as God’s Son, with the Spirit descending on Him.
  • Believers’ Baptism: For those who trust in Jesus, it symbolizes union with Christ—His death, burial, and resurrection (Rom. 6:3–4). It is a public declaration of faith and follows conversion, signifying new life through the Spirit.

THE TEMPTATION – Mark 1:12-13

Jesus was truly vulnerable yet completely victorious.

  • Jesus knew what it was like to be HUNGRY.
  • Jesus knew what it was like to be ALONE.
  • Jesus knew what it was like to be TIRED.

Jesus overcame sin by the indwelling of the SPIRIT not the FLESH. You can’t defeat temptation in the flesh. That’s because sin is not a behaviour to be managed it’s a power to be destroyed.

THE PROCLAMATION – Mark 1:14-15

Jesus is the GOSPEL. Jesus is the PROMISE and PLAN of God for the SALVATION of the WORLD including you and me.

  • He came to Galilee proclaiming the good news of God.
  • He’s coming to you proclaiming the good news of God.

The Kingdom comes in REPENTANCE and BELIEF:

  • Repent – Accept our need for forgiveness
  • Believe – Trust that Jesus is enough.
